Angus Gunn’s development has gone under the radar at City over the last year. After starring for the under 23’s recently in elegant fashion, he could very well be a readymade replacement for the reportedly unsettled Claudio Bravo.
The England under 21 keeper has yet to be given an opportunity in the first team at City. However, a chance could be on the cards in the upcoming future with cult hero Willy Cabellero’s contract running out in the summer after over three years of being the second choice. Gunn could have his time to show what he has to offer.
This also comes after Claudio Bravo’s poor performance during Everton’s 4-0 disposal of the Blues last weekend. However, this wasn’t by any means the first time the Chilean has come under considerable scrutiny for his performances. He may be able to distribute a ball and start attacks from the back expertly, but his lack of ability to make straightforward saves is alarming.
Even during his debut, after beginning solidly, he proceeded to drop a crossed ball leading to a United goal, and the downfall started there.
It must be said that during the beginning many people were very supportive of Pep’s decision to bring in Bravo with his technical ability. However, this view has been dampened since. With many City fans turning on Bravo and his goalkeeping skills, surely Angus Gunn should come into consideration with performances of late showing both his shot stopping and technical qualities.
During recent youth team matches for City against talented sides like Manchester United and Spurs he has shown his ability to start attacks from the back. Not only this, he has regularly been seen coming out of his box with confidence and composure while making outstanding saves to keep City in certain games whereby they should have been behind if it wasn’t for Gunn’s heroics.
He is also displaying a keen interest to learn, develop and enhance his technicality on the ball which has impressed Guardiola.
Pep has recently stated that he made a mistake in regards to his goalkeeping situation. Many City fans believe it could be rectified by bringing Joe Hart back. However, this is highly unlikely due to the relationship between goalkeeper and manager, and unfortunately, as much as he is a club legend, City supporters are unlikely to see his passion in a City shirt again.
He is currently featuring for the Italian outfit Torino. However, it is yet to be seen if this will continue past next season.
With Gunn going widely unnoticed as he has made his way through the City ranks since being signed from Norwich in 2011, don’t be surprised to see him featuring shortly.
In doing so, he would follow in his father’s footsteps providing solid performances which may provide a headache for Guardiola as Angus makes his presence known amongst the household names within City’s ranks.
