Following Manchester City’s 1-2 victory over Lancashire rivals Burnley, Brazilian midfielder Fernandinho has revealed how manager Pep Guardiola prepared his side for their visit to Turf Moor.
Speaking to BT Sports via the M.E.N, Fernandinho confirms that everyone predicted Burnley’s heavy pressing and aggressive style of play would be forced upon the traveling Blues.
“We expected a game like that.” Fernandinho told BT.
“We analysed Burnley before, they play long balls, play for second balls and they started like that. But we scored two goals and turned it around and won the game.
“We want to be champions; we have to play these kind of games.” Said the Brazilian midfielder.
The result confirmed City would return to the top of the Premier League once again but Chelsea and Liverpool’s victories just hours later pushed City back down to third.
Guardiola’s team combatted the physical Burnley style of play to overcome a 1-0 lead by the Tykes to secure a 1-2 victory and give the traveling City supporters a pleasant short journey home.
City are expected to face a similar challenge with a lot more flair next week as the Blues host league leaders Chelsea at the Etihad Stadium. Hopefully, Guardiola can conjure up another significant master-plan to prevent Conte’s team winning eight games on the bounce.
