Pep Guardiola is said to be interested in signing Holger Badstuber on a free transfer this summer, according to Manchester Evening News.
City boss Guardiola tried to sign the centre-back on loan in January from his former club Bayern Munich, but the German decided to stay closer to home, instead of moving to Schalke on a short-term deal.
The German is out of contract at Bayern this summer, and while Schalke sporting director Christian Heidel has confirmed his club won’t be signing Badstuber on a permanent deal, Guardiola is still said to be interested in a move for Holger.
While Vincent Kompany has been out injured for the majority of the season, John Stones and Nicolas Otamendi have come in for some criticism for their displays at the heart of the defence. A move for another leader to fit into the core of the City defence could well be an option for Guardiola this summer.
Eliaquim Mangala is also set to be sold in the summer when he returns from his loan spell with Valencia, so it makes City signing a centre-back ever so more likely.
Juventus defender Leonardo Bonucci has again been linked with a big-money transfer to the Etihad Stadium, but with Badstuber being a player Guardiola trusts, along with the fact that he is out of contract and two years younger than the Italian international, he may well be the player that Pep takes a chance on over the summer.
