The big question on every fans mind at the moment, is whether Sergio Aguero is suffering from a confidence crisis, despite his electric start to life under Pep Guardiola?
A couple of City fans have recently said to me that Sergio just ‘doesn’t seem happy this season.’
Aguero appeared to be enjoying life under Guardiola in the opening month of the season with goals against Sunderland, West Ham, a brace away at Stoke and hat-tricks in the Champions League against Steaua Bucharest and Borussia Mönchengladbach.
As we all know Aguero received a retrospective ban for an elbow on Winston Reid, in the 3-1 win against West Ham. During the three games that Aguero missed, City took home every point that was up for grabs – including an away win against United.
Aguero returned from his ban in good form, bagging two at Swansea, however, since then goals have been coming far a few between for the forward. The Argentinian has failed to score a goal for City and Argentina since then, including a penalty miss at the weekend against Everton.
Now, this isn’t a time to panic but a man who has the best minutes per goal ratio in Premier League history may well be aware of this current baron spell. Two missed penalties in the space of five days, however, will certainly be on the mind of Aguero.
Guardiola has come out himself on numerous occasions this season to challenge Aguero to press and has even given Aguero videos of an unnamed striker to study, in hopes he can develop into an all round better player and not just the explosive goal machine we all know and love.
Suspension, missed penalties, new system, failings with Argentina, injury scares, maybe the fall of the old guard and the untouchables of the Mancini era with Joe Hart and Yaya Toure being surplus to requirements all may be playing on Aguero’s mind, but who knows.
Let’s all hope we get to the smiling Argentinian celebrating a few goals in the upcoming fixtures for Manchester City.
