Manchester City have signed Athletic Bilbao defender Aymeric Laporte for a club-record £57million. The 23-year-old has signed a contract until June 30th, 2023.
The France international has signed for the hopeful Premier League champions less than two weeks after negotiations commenced regarding a possible move.
Laporte famously rejected a move to City at the final stages in 2016 but admitted he could not turn down the opportunity to work for Pep Guardiola a second time.
Laporte made his debut for Bilbao in 2012 and had since attracted interest from some of European football’s biggest clubs. His ability to play the ball out from the back along with his reading of danger make him the ideal candidate for Pep Guardiola’s defence.
Laporte went on to make 222 appearances for Bilbao despite only being 23-years-old. Despite not being capped by France, Laporte is keen to make his debut for his nationality team and would be hopeful of playing at this summer’s World Cup in Russia.
