Despite the recent form of Leroy Sané and Raheem Sterling, Pep Guardiola has told the in-form duo that there’s still room for improvement in their play. The pair operates predominately as wide players and have recently been the battering ram for City in combatting opposition teams.
After the duo initially struggled to settle into life in Manchester, their form under the tutelage of Guardiola has witnessed them become the most devastating attacking wide players in Premier League football. Since Christmas, the attacking duo have been involved in 18 of City’s 27 goals this calendar year.
However, despite the fans being in awe with their new comprehensive partnership, Guardiola believes the two must continue to improve to achieve their potential. Speaking ahead of City’s clash with Stoke, he had this to say on the Sané.
‘People believed when he arrived here he would immediately settle within a few seconds. He needed time, but the quality was there in the beginning.
‘He’s playing good, but also we show him a lot of clips of the not good things he is doing and what he can improve.
‘At the end, we cannot expect that someone of 20, 21 years old is done. He has a lot to do to be a better player.
‘Sane has good actions as a winger, but still, has to be in (the full) 90 minutes more in the games. Sometimes he disappears a little bit, but that is part of the process.’
It wasn’t just Sané in for a pep-talk, as Sterling received wise words from their Spanish manager, ‘He’s playing a lot, a lot of minutes, a lot of games. It’s true how many chances he creates, how many chances he scores from. He creates penalties; he is aggressive without the ball and presses and many other things.
‘But it is the same case as Leroy, he is a guy who still needs to improve. I would not like him to believe or think that it’s already done, that he’s good enough.
‘He can be better, especially in the simple things. Still, he makes mistakes in the straightforward and easy things. When he improves that – wow!’
