Borussia Dortmund midfielder Julian Weigl has become Manchester City’s primary candidate to replace the departing Yaya Toure this summer, reports Jose Alvarez Haya.

Pep Guardiola has identified the 22-year-old midfielder as the ideal player to settle into his complex system, with many describing him as the ‘new Sergio Busquets’.

It seems a deal bring Weigl to the Etihad Stadium could be possible as the player is keen to join Guardiola’s revolution at City. On the contrary, Dortmund are unlikely to willingly allow Weigl depart the club unless City meets their valuation for the player.

Alvarez’ colleague at El Chiringuito TV, Jose Calabres, has also confirmed the news of City’s interest in the German international.

Calabres reported on Tuesday that City had identified Isco as a transfer target and already talks between Guardiola and the player have taken place. Should any deal for Isco not materialise, City will return for Leicester forward Riyad Mahrez.

City have been chasing Isco before his move to Real Madrid in 2013 and set to return for Mahrez – after a failed attempt in January – if the Spaniard doesn’t join the Blues.

City have been long-term admirers of Weigl and failed in a bid to sign the player in January 2016 when Dortmund rebuffed a £21million bid.

Whether a move to City occurs or not, the club has identified a pass-master with great in-play intelligence as the player they wish to recruit. To back this claim up, Emre Can and Jorginho have been linked with moves to City all season and now Weigl seems to be the leading candidate.
