Manchester City are close to signing Brazilian Fabinho from Monaco, according to respected Spanish journalist Gerard Romero.

The defensive midfielder/right-back has been in good form all season, helping his side to the Champions League semi-finals before winning the Ligue 1 title just weeks later.

The 23-year-old also played the full 90 minutes for Monaco in both legs in the Champions League round of 16 tie against City – where they beat the citizens to progress on away goals.

Sky Sports reported back in March that Fabinho’s father told French television programme Telefoot his son had held talks with three Premier League clubs; Arsenal, Manchester United and City. He also revealed that his reference is to join Pep Guardiola at City.

Fabinho has also previously mentioned that he would like to join a club in the Premier League eventually, so City will be confident of beating the likes of Barcelona and Juventus to the signing of the holding midfielder with the two other clubs who have also shown an interest in the player.

Romero didn’t reveal the transfer fee that City would be paying, but it is highly unlikely that he will come cheap with his contract running until the summer of 2021 at Monaco.

The Spanish journalist also broke the news that City were set to sign Leroy Sane and Nolito weeks before both deals were announced last summer, so City fans will be confident of the deal crossing the line and Fabinho signing on the dotted line.
