Manchester City are leading the chase for £50million-rated Ajax defender Mattijs De Ligt who is wanted by Bayern Munich, Barcelona, and Arsenal.
De Ligt has been dubbed the ‘new Virgil Van Dijk’ and partners the Liverpool defender for the Dutch national team. Ajax have placed a £50million price-tag on his shoulders and City remain the favorites for the defender should he move this summer.
The 18-year-old informed his agent he didn’t want to move to Barcelona due to his game-time being decreased significantly, report Sunday Mirror.
Arsenal and Bayern Munich are bulking at the prospect of paying £50million for the player who has never experienced professional football in Europe’s top-five leagues.
City will have scouts at the Amsterdam Arena today as Ajax play PSV hoping to ensure their bitter rivals do not win the championship at their expense.
Speaking about his future, De Ligt had this to say:
“I think some players would be tempted when they get massive offers. But compared to ordinary people I think I earn a huge wage (€15,000) right now, anyway.
“My next step just has to be right for me when I look at the team and where and how I will live.”
