Manchester City are closing in on a deal to bring Napoli midfielder Jorginho to the Etihad Stadium.
City want to sign the midfielder, and after holding positive talks with his entourage, he could join Pep Guardiola’s title winners in the close season.
Goal report City are hoping to make two summer signings this year as they look to improve on their title-victory. Along with Jorginho, City wish to sign a forward to ensure the completion of their squad.
City are believed to be close to sealing a deal for Jorginho but with Napoli’s involvement in the Serie A title race, any official announcement is likely to be postponed until the end of the season.
Jorginho emerged as Guardiola’s priority midfield candidate to replace the departing Yaya Toure and the 26-year-old valued at £50million.
Previously, City had targeted Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder Fred but it’s now Jorginho, and not Fred, who City believe is more suited to the Premier League.
Txiki Begiristain held talks with Jorginho’s entourage last week where it is believed personal terms were agreed. Agreeing a fee seems to be the only remaining factor to conclude the deal with Napoli.
City also want to sign a forward this summer with Chelsea’s Eden Hazard the club’s first priority for the position. The 27-year-old is going to be difficult to prize away from Chelsea but he is on a two-man shortlist for the position. Riyad Mahrez still interests City but the Leicester player is not believed to be on the shortlist for Guardiola.
Kylian Mbappé’s situation at Paris-Saint Germain is being closely monitored by City, and should UEFA clamp down on the Ligue 1 Champions for excessive spending, the Blues intend to move for the 19-year-old.
Should Mbappé become available, Guardiola will instruct the City chiefs to not allow the opportunity to sign the player go a begging for the third-successive summer.
It remains unclear what could occur in France with Mbappé but City have received some positive feeback concerning his availability.
