Manchester City have registered an interest in Nice midfielder Jean-Michael Seri but face stiff competition from Manchester United for his signature.
Manchester Evening News are reporting City have identified Seri, along with Borussia Dortmund midfielder Julian Weigl, as potential summer targets as the club look for a long-term replacement for Fernandinho.
City will have to fend off competition from bitter-rivals United should they wish to sign Seri, as Jose Mourinho has identified the Ivory Coast international as a possible replacement for the retiring Michael Carrick.
In January, it seemed likely City would conclude a deal to bring Brazilian midfielder Fred in from Shakhtar Donetsk, however, the Blues have cooled their interest in the 25-year-old with United keen on adding him to their squad.
Guardiola is well aware of City’s over-reliance on 32-year-old Fernandinho and has made a ‘number 6’ his priority signing for City this summer.
The 26-year-old Ivory Coast international has been scouted by both clubs on a number of occasions this season, with Barcelona also keen on a move.
Seri fits the billing for both clubs as his attack-minded nature and ability to win the ball back are something both managers are looking for in a potential new recruit.
City have been long-term admirers of Weigl but doubts remain over his physicality and whether he would be ideally suited to Premier League football, hence their interest in Seri and Fred in the past.
