The transfer of Jorginho to Manchester City was believed to be at an advanced stage; however, it seems now Manchester United are ready to battle their rivals for his signature.
The 26-year-old has become City’s primary candidate to replace Yaya Toure and his agent, Joao Santos, has held talks with City’s Director of Football, Txiki Begiristain, about a possible summer move.
According to the Daily Mirror, Jose Mourinho has identified Jorginho as a potential summer recruit with his passing and deep-lying attacking style identical to the retiring Michael Carrick.
United recently defeated City in the race to sign Alexis Sanchez from Arsenal, and the Blues will not budge from what they have previously agreed financially with players or pay higher than the value they see necessary.
City will fear United trumping their financial offer for the player, but Pep Guardiola’s side remain confident a deal can be concluded at the expense of second-placed United.
There is one other side-story to this saga with Jorginho’s agent publicly stating he could remain in Italy and sign an improved contract with Napoli.
Speaking to TuttoNapoli, Santos had this to say: “Renewal at the end of the season? Yes, but only because there are four games left and we don’t want to disturb at the moment. There are important teams after him because of his season with club and country.
“If I speak with four or five important teams who want Jorginho, that doesn’t mean that it’s done or that he is leaving.”
City are winning the race for the Brazilian-born Italy midfielder, but unless they can conclude the deal soon, there will always be a risk of him remaining in Naples or joining Jose Mourinho’s side.
