Napoli midfielder Jorginho has spoken of his delight to have been praised by Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola after both sides met in the Champions League group stages.
Late last week, it was reported City held talks with Jorginho’s agent regarding a possible summer switch to the Etihad Stadium.
Now, in an interview with ESPN FC, Jorginho focused on Guardiola’s “marvellous” description of his performance against the Blues earlier in the season.
“It’s always nice to receive compliments, but it’s spectacular when they come from a manager with that importance and winning past,” Jorginho told reporters.
“He’s a global icon. All I can do is to be grateful. This is a consequence not just of my work but of all my teammates in Napoli.”
City are keen to recruit another defensive-midfielder this summer as 34-year-old Yaya Toure will leave the Blues when his contract expires at the end of the season.
Jorginho’s passing game and intensity from midfield led many to believe he would be too weak for the physicality of the English game, but the 26-year-old thinks he could be an asset to a side that compliments his playing style.
I think that I could fit. It depends on who else is around me — I need players with the same characteristics that I have,” he added.
“There are English teams with this style of play, ball on the ground, quick transitions, high pressure.
“If one of those teams wanted me, I could fit and the other way round. My football way is not a usual one.”
The Brazilian-born Italy international seems content with Guardiola’s comments about his game, but with apparent interest from Manchester United and Liverpool, City may need to act fast to sign the Napoli midfielder.
