Manchester City have signed Schalke winger Leroy Sane on a five-year deal worth £31.4million. The winger becomes Pep Guardiola’s fourth summer signing and is expected to commence training with his new team-mates tomorrow. Sane has been wanted by City since January and closure to the deal now takes City’s spending above the £75million mark with more signings still to come.
The twenty-year-old joins City after two seasons in Schalke’s first-team. Since making his debut in 2014 for Schalke, Sane has gone on to score eleven times in forty-seven games for the Bundesliga club including an impressive goal vs. Real Madrid in the Champions League during the 2014-2015 season.
Sane will wear the number 19 jersey and joins City as they are preparing to rebuild their squad with youthful acquisitions to cease the growth of an aging team. The winger was a member of the German national team that got to the semi-final of Euro 2016 – playing just one game during that time.
Bayern Munich attempted to steal a march on City in the pursuit of Sane’s signature however the deal was concluded once Guardiola personally called him asking him to join his City revolution.
He told ManCity.com: “I feel exquisite, I’m happy to be here and happy that it has all worked out. Now I can settle here in Manchester and play for City.
“One of the reasons I decided to join City was Pep Guardiola; he convinced me to come here and that I can continue to progress. I know I will learn a lot under him and now I can take the next step in my career.
“I followed Pep at Barcelona and at Bayern where he achieved a lot and worked well with young players.
“I think he can make me a complete player. I think I will need a bit of time to start with because it’s another league and there’s a different style of play but I think I can adapt very quickly.”
